Japanese
The San-San-Kudo, known as the ceremony of the Three Times Three Exchange, is the exchange of nuptial cups performed by the bride and groom. Three sips are taken from each of the three sake nesting cups, first by the groom, then followed by the bride for each cup. The first San signifies three couples, each set of parents and the bridal couple. The second San represents the three human failings of hatred, passion and ignorance. Ku, or nine, is a lucky number in the Japan. Finally Do, meaning deliverance, denotes the couple's dedication to deliverance from the human failings, thus the significance of Three Times Three. This aspect of the ceremony is rich in tradition and deeply significant in Japanese culture. In fact, many traditional Japanese are of the opinion that the marriage is not valid without this ritual.
